FORESTERS HALL, GAWLER ST, PORTLAND - History
The first office of the Portland Guardian. Bought by Ancient Order of Foresters in 1864. The stone facade was added in 1854/5 and a parapet to the facade in 1864. Destroyed by fire 1985.FORESTERS HALL, GAWLER ST, PORTLAND - Interpretation of Site
House or cottage which had stone facade added in 1854/5 by architect J. Hughes. Parapet added to facade in 1864 by architext Daniel Nicholson. Building destoryed by arson on 1st June 1985.
FORESTERS HALL, GAWLER ST, PORTLAND - Archaeological Significance
Unknown - the area has been dramatically disturbed and is unlikely to contain cultural deposits. However area towards the back of the lot (refer to plan) has archaeological potential based on early maps/records & conversation with locals, previous building did exist in the area dating to the 1850s (Gordon Stokes pers. comm. Jan 2009).

FORESTERS HALL, GAWLER ST, PORTLAND - Heritage Inventory Description
Two-storey timber hall with bluestone facades and iron roof constructed in 1842. Site inspected Jan 1994 - building destroyed by arson on 1st June 1985. Footings remain.
