CAPTAIN MILLS COTTAGE SITE, PORT FAIRY - History
Reportedly built by Captain John Mills in c.1845. John Mills was the harbourmaster at Port Fairy from 1853 to 1871. He lived in the house from themid 1850s to 1871 (his brother, Charles,first occupied the house). Timber residence. Centre weatherboard section built in c.1845, with the rear section constructed after this date. Front section, possibly prefabricated, was built in 1853 (Nat. Trust File B1633 - Statement of Significance).
CAPTAIN MILLS COTTAGE SITE, PORT FAIRY - Archaeological Significance
The site is archaeologically significant as it has the potential to contain intact occupation deposits dating to earliest settlement of Port Fairy.

Heritage Inventory Significance: One of few surviving structures from early settlement period. Association with important local figures (eg John & Charles Mills). Typical dwelling for lower middle class.
