Statement of Significance
The two storey brick and stone warehouse was constructed in 1845/46 to facilitate the Portland branch operations of the Sydney based merchants Must and Flower. After 1850 Must acquired sole ownership of the business. The original two storey warehouse of hand made bricks and timber roof shingles was extended at an unknown date by construction of a two storey bluestone addition of a warehouse and residence.
The Must and Flower warehouse is a utilitarian structure without any stylistic pretensions. The brick structure, with internal timber floors, loading bays and patent roof tiles over timber shingles represents the first era of building development in Portland. Thomas Must and Horace Flower were two of the infant towns most influential residents as both held responsible civic offices in the first years of settlement at Portland; Must being the first Chairman of the Municipal District of Portland in 1856-58 and later a Mayor of the Borough (1866-68).
The Must and Flower Warehouse is in an extremely dilapidated state and has suffered structural damage through use.
