Statement of Significance
The Portland town house, Sandilands, is an imposing two storey stucco rendered conservative classical style house most probably built in the early 1850's for Portland doctor William S Sutherland. Solicitors Phillip Scott and Frederick Lynne owned the property in the years 1857-1870 and 1871-1898 respectively. In 1911, this substantial, axially planned structure with dominant doric portico was converted to a guest house.
Sandilands is an accomplished architectural design combining colonial Georgian building traditions and Doric portico with Italianate stylistic motifs in a disciplined, well proportioned axial composition. This town house is an important illustration of architectural style in transition, and the most impressive of the 1850's residence in Portland, excepting the mansion houses 'Burswood' and 'Maretimo'. The architect for this building is not recorded.
Classified; 12/05/1958.
The facade remains intact. The interior has not been examined.
