Statement of Significance
Classified Group includes: Courthouse, Gaol, Police Station, Lock-up & Forests and Lands Office.
They were built during the years 1857-9, when Beechworth was the main centre of the north-east, active with gold mining and a major town on what was then the Melbourne-Sydney road.
Each one is a good example of the early official building, enhanced by the handsome stone. Together they form a unique group, for both historical and architectural reasons. The locality is made the more impressive by the massive Gaol (1860).
