Statement of Significance
The original Commercial Hotel was burnt down in the 1870s and was rebuilt on the same site by the then owner, Henry Phillips. The architect and builder are not known. An additional storey was completed in 1891, and although there have been many internal alterations over the years, the pressed metal ceilings and the plasterwork in the dining room and residential entrance are interesting survivals.
Externally the rendered brick building has a very attractive two storey verandah with elaborate cast iron trim, and the hotel plays a significant part of the streetscape of the business section of the main street.
