Statement of Significance
The Village of Rathmines was the name given to the subdivision of crown allotment 70 of the Parish of Boroondara in the mid 1850's (now the block bounded by Barkers, Burke, Rathmines and Auburn Roads). It derives its significance from a complex and unique mix of suburban subdivision and housing styles which reveal different phases of the development of the middle-class suburb of Hawthorn. The cluster of houses in the south-western corner reflects the influence of topography and proximity to railway transport facilities which so influenced the development of Hawthorn. Of particular interest is the unquie row of large houses in Harcourt Street set back in long gardens and built to the design of the architect John Beswicke between the late 1870s and 1900.
