RIVERSIDE INN, RICHMOND - History
Heritage Inventory History of Site: The hotel site has been in continuos occupation as a hotel since at least 1843. Records of ownership go back to 1840. In 1857, the hotel was known as the Sir Henry Barkly Hotel. Suggested that the current Riversdie Inn's basic structure dates t o1866. A skittle alley and boathouse were associated with the Sir henry Barkly hotel. The boathouse probably dates to 1866 (and prior to 1866).
RIVERSIDE INN, RICHMOND - Interpretation of Site
Heritage Inventory Interpretation: The fabric of the Riverside Inn was destroyed by fire some time ago and has since been exposed to weather and further ruined. Only historically important aspect is the nature of the locale, the rarity of a hotel on a river and its associations with Richmond as a "pleasure ground". However such associations are compromised by the nearby traffic. There are two possibilities for archaeological potential: the Richmond Boathouse under the concrete car park and Skittle Alley beneath the billboard/garden bed.
