Statement of Significance
This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

421 BOURKE STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
First land sale 1837, Block 13, Allotment 16 purchased by James Smith. 1839 - no buildings, indication of subdivisions and lanes. Single storey bluestone building constructed 1859 for stock and station agents Kaye, Butchart & Co. By 1863 also a brick house, offices and three rooms over. Addition 1869. From 1880s occupied by the Commercial Bank of Australia Ltd. 1919 third storey added to accommodate its expanding operations.
