IT WAS SYMPATHETICALLY REMODELLED AND EXTENDED BY AN ADDITIONAL THREE FLOORS AND BETWEEN 1929 AND 1931 TO DESIGNS BY KINGSLEY A. HENDERSON AND IN 1960-1961 AN ADDITIONAL FLOOR WAS CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN THE ORIGINAL SECOND AND THIRD FLOORS. THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING IS OF SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY RENAISSANCE REVIVAL DESIGN AND ITS DEMONSTRATION OF A SUPERIMPOSED TRABEATED ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEM. THE GROUPINGS OF PILASTERS AT THE CORNERS OF THE BUILDING IS AN UNUSUAL WAY OF EXPRESSING THE THREE DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SUCH A BUILDING. THE GROUND FLOOR BANKING CHAMBER IS AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A TWENTIETH CENTURY RENAISSANCE INSPIRED INTERIOR DISPLAYING COFFERED PLASTER CEILINGS, GRAND COLUMNS AND STONE AND BRONZE DECORATIVE ELEMENTS. THE FIRST FLOOR BOARD ROOM ALSO EXHIBITS FINE PLASTERWORK. IN ESSENCE, IT IS A BUILDING WHICH DEMONSTRATES SUPERIOR SOLIDITY AND GRANDEUR AND OCCUPIES A SITE OF SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPORTANCE TO MELBOURNE'S COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT.
