This place is included on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, for its potential to contain historical archaeological remains associated with the settlement and growth of early Melbourne. Under the terms of the Heritage Act 2017 there is protection for all historical archaeology sites and objects in the state.

First land sale 1837, Block 12, Allotment 20, John Gardiner. 1839 - building on site. 1877 -one-, two- and three-storey buildings; Smiths Hotel; Lear, Plumber, store/warehouse. 1888 - three two-storey buildings, four-storey building; Colonial Bank Hotel, Ironmongers. 1891 (ratebooks) 12-room hotel; 1893 rebuilt hotel, 30 rooms. 1905 - four-storey building, Colonial Bank Hoteland fourshops.
