Statement of Significance
The Burrum Burrum Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Banyena, has significance as an important place of commemoration and as a significant cultural landscape to the local area.Ten acres for the cemetery were reserved in 1876, although it was not gazetted until 1891.The cemetery is set on sloping land and features numerous headstones and surrounds, together with exotic and native trees including Italian Cypresses and eucalypts. Three hundred and forty-nine burials are recorded in the cemetery.
The Burrum Burrum Cemetery is historically and aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of the settlement of Banyena in 1876 with the reservation of 10 acres as a cemetery that was not gazetted until 1891. The cemetery demonstrates important visual qualities. These qualities include the rural setting comprising an open grassed area of sloping land featuring numerous headstones, grave surrounds laid out in regular rows, with perimeter vehicular drives and several exotic and native trees including Italian Cypresses and eucalypts.
The Burrum Burrum is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by the Banyena community for cultural, spiritual and commemorative reasons.
Overall, the Burrum Burrum Cemetery is of LOCAL significance.

Burrum Burrum Cemetery, Cemetery Road, BANYENA - Physical Description 1
The site of the Burrum Burrum Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Banyena, encompasses approximately 10 acres of grassed sloping land. The graves are marked in general rows, with gravelled vehicular drives defined about the perimeter of the graveyard. The graves feature numerous types of headstones and surrounds. Another feature of the site is the various trees, including Italian Cypresses near the main entrance (flanking the vehicular drive), other exotics and eucalypts. The Cemetery is bound by an introduced concrete post and steel mesh fence, approximately 1300 mm high. There are scrolled metal vehicular and pedestrian gates that mark the main entrance.
