Statement of Significance
The former Halls Gap State School off Grampians Road, Halls Gap, has significance as an historical legacy of the development of the Halls Gap State School in the early 20th century and particularly from 1928 when this building was constructed and opened. The building is also a predominantly intact example of an interwar Bungalow style. Although some of the windows have been changed, the building appears to be in good condition.
The former Halls Gap State School is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates some original design qualities of an interwar Bungalow style. These qualities include the gable roof forms, asymmetrical composition (with the off-centre minor gable), wide eaves with exposed timber rafters, face brick chimney with solider coursed top and the timber gable ventilators. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the single storey height, horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated roof cladding, bank of multi-paned timber framed windows on the rear gable end, paired six paned timber framed hopper sash windows under the minor gable at the front and the window and the single door opening at the side of the minor gable.
The former Halls Gap State School is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of education in Halls Gap from the early 20th century. In particular, this building was constructed in 1928, becoming the first permanent school in Halls Gap. The State School had operated from the Public Hall from 1921 and previously a school operated between 1890 and 1896 at Upper Halls Gap which is now under Lake Bellfield.
The former Halls Gap State School is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by the Halls Gap community for educational reasons.
Overall, the former Halls Gap State School is of LOCAL significance.

Halls Gap School No. 3058, 10-14 School Road, HALLS GAP - Physical Description 1
The former Halls Gap Primary School building off Grampians Road, Halls Gap, forms part of the Halls Gap Primary School complex and is surrounded by young and mature trees, with an open asphalted area at the front.
The modestly scaled, asymmetrical, single storey, horizontal timber weatherboard, interwar Bungalow styled school building is characterised by a gable roof form, together with a minor off-centre gable that projects towards the front. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated steel. An early face brick chimney with a solider coursed top adorns the roofline. Wide overhangs and exposed timber rafters are features of the eaves.
Other early features of the design include the timber gable ventilators, bank of timber framed multi paned windows with four paned highlights in the rear gable end, double six paned hopper sash windows under the front minor gable and the size of the window opening at the front of the main gable end. However the timber framed windows on the main front gable have replaced the original multi-paned hopper sash and double hung window. The single door opening at the side of the minor gable is also original.
