House, 36-38 Newall Street, MARNOO - Physical Description 1
The house, 36-38 Newall Street, Marnoo, neighbours other predominantly single storey, horizontal weatherboard residential buildings with pitched galvanised corrugated iron roofs. This building is generally in accord with the form, construction and setbacks of the significant places visually connected to it. It is set on averaged sized corner allotment for the area (corner of Newall and Park Streets) with sizeable front and side setbacks. The front garden consists of a lawned area with a stone border to substantial garden beds. At the side is a gravelled driveway with further substantial perimeter flower beds. The front is bound by tubular steel and cyclone wire fence with a concrete plinth and piers, and is approximately 1300 mm high. The Late Victorian design of the house suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th or early 20th century.
The symmetrical, single storey, single fronted, horizontal weatherboard, Late Victorian styled house is characterised by a hipped roof form, together with a shallow hipped verandah that projects towards the front. These roof forms are clad in galvanised corrugated iron. Modest overhangs with decorative panelling, paired timber brackets (having patera between) are features of the eaves.
The symmetrical nature of the design is accentuated by the early central timber framed doorway, with early sidelights and transom. Flanking the doorway are early timber framed double hung windows. Other early timber framed double hung windows are situated on the side facades.
A feature of the design is the front verandah. It is supported by introduced turned timber columns with a timber fretwork valance.
