Statement of Significance
The house at 29 Silvermines Road, St. Arnaud makes a significant contribution to the predominantly single storey, Victorian styled residential streetscape of Silvermines Road. The Victorian style of the house suggests that it was constructed in the late 19th century.
Although partially altered (due to the introduced verandah columns, concrete verandah floor and side carport), the house at 29 Silvermines Road is historically and architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in St. Arnaud in the late 19th century and it demonstrates original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the symmetrical composition, single storey height, simple dominant hipped roof form and return hipped verandah. Other intact qualities include the galvanised corrugated iron roof cladding, tuckpointed brick walls, brick chimneys with corbelled tops, eaves with paired timber brackets, centrally located front door with side and toplights, flanking timber framed, double hung windows and decorative cast iron verandah detailing (posts valances and brackets). The tall hedge on the front boundary contributes to the significance of the place.
Overall, the house at 29 Silvermines Road is of LOCAL significance.

House, 29 Silvermines Road, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The house at 29 Silvermines Road, St. Arnaud is set on a corner block and has a narrow setback from Silvermines Road with a slightly wider setback from the side street. The house is set on a rising block and is screened from the street by a tall hedge along Silvermines Road and grape vines along the boundary side fence. The house is further masked by the lush Wisteria vine trained along the verandah.
The house is single storey with a hipped M form rood clad in corrugated steel. The eaves are supported on paired decorative timber brackets. There are two tall chimneys (now painted) with decorative corbelled brickwork. The house has a hipped return verandah with a straight pitched roof clad in corrugated steel. The verandah was largely reconstructed to its original form by a previous owner. The verandah has cast iron posts and cast iron frieze and brackets which have been introduced. The cast iron came from the verandah of the Commonwealth Hotel in Napier Street when it was dismantled. The verandah floor is now concrete.
The house is of tuckpointed brickwork which is now painted a brick red colour. There is a central doorway with transom light and either side is a single, timber framed double hung window with stone sill.
