Statement of Significance
The St. Arnaud Secondary School building makes a significant contribution to the architectural and visual amenity of the local streetscape. This building was constructed in 1875, probably to a design by the head of the Architecture branch of the Victorian Department of Education, Henry Bastow. Initially built as the St. Arnaud State School, the building and site were taken over by the St. Arnaud High (Secondary) School in 1918.
The St. Arnaud Secondary School building is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of an Education Department of Victoria Gothic style. These qualities include the major, steeply pitched gable roof form that traverses the site, together with two projecting gables at the front, a central projecting jerkin-head roof and a small hipped wing at the side. Other intact qualities include the unpainted brick Old English style chimneys with corbelled tops; galvanised ventilation stacks and ventilation dormers; narrow eaves; timber framed, multi paned double hung and hopper sash windows; semi-circular arched windows on the smaller side wings; quarry faced granite plinth; and the decorative features (crafted timber bargeboards and finials, dichromatic brick patterning and quoinwork and rendered masonry blind arches punctuated by stylised keystones on the jerkin-head wing). The uninterrupted views of the school building, due to the large open grassed playfields, contributes to the significance of the place.
The St. Arnaud Secondary School building is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the development of St. Arnaud State School from 1875 until 1915, and with the St. Arnaud High (Secondary) School from 1918 until the present day. The building is also probably associated with the Victorian Government Architect, Henry Bastow.
The St. Arnaud Secondary School building is socially significant at a LOCAL level. It is recognised and valued by the St. Arnaud community for educational reasons.
Overall, the St. Arnaud Secondary School building is of LOCAL significance.

St. Arnaud Secondary College (former State School No. 1646), 8-24 Smith Street, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
The St. Arnaud Secondary School and site, 8-24 Smith Street, St. Arnaud, make an important visual and architectural contribution to the local streetscape. The site is identified by the imposing brick School building, together with the introduced trees, other structures and open play fields.
The single storey, largely symmetrical, unpainted brick, Education Department of Victoria Gothic styled St. Arnaud Secondary School building is characterised by a major, steeply pitched gable roof form that traverses the site, together with two projecting gables at the front, and a central projecting jerkin-head roof. A smaller hipped roof wing is situated at the sides. Several unpainted brick Old English style chimneys with corbelled tops adorn the rooflines, as do the several galvanised ventilation stacks and ventilation dormers. Narrow overhangs are a feature of the eaves. The timber framed, multi paned double hung and hopper sash windows are early, as are the semi-circular arched windows on the smaller side wings. Another distinctive element of the design is the quarry faced granite plinth. Early decorative features include the crafted timber bargeboards and finials, dichromatic brick patterning and quoinwork and rendered masonry blind arches punctuated by stylised keystones on the jerkin-head wing.
