Statement of Significance
The Bristol Reef Workings site has an open cut/stope, dating from the 1850s - 1860s period, quarried mullock heaps and an intact sludge pond.
The Bristol Reef Workings site is historically and scientifically important at a LOCAL level as a substantially intact example of an important gold mining technique. Gold mining sites are of crucial importance for the pivotal role they have played since 1851 in the development of Victoria. Overall the Bristol Reef Workings site is of LOCAL significance.

Bristol Reef Workings, Sunraysia Highway, ST ARNAUD - Physical Description 1
DESCRIPTION & INTERPRETATION:
Site 73.3. Gap/Bristol Reef (open cut probably dates to the earliest mining period c.1854/1860s).
Open cut/stope. 850 metres along Sunraysia Highway from its junction with Woolpack Dry
Weather Track (east side of highway) is a partly filled, but still very deep, open cut/stope (measures approximately 30 metres x 20 metres, and about 10 metres deep). Associated with the open cut/stope are some largely quarried mullock heaps.
Sludge pond. On the opposite side of the highway to the open cut/stope is a small intact sludge pond. A search of the area found no trace of any associated battery site.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:
Site 73.3 has:
. Scientific Significance, because of the well preserved state of the open cut/stope.
