Statement of Significance
The stone lined drain from Sloane Street to Pleasant Creek, Stawell is constructed from Heatherlie Quarry sandstone and Black Range granite. These remaining 19th century examples of nineteenth century infrastructure are important details to be retained in the landscape as they add to the heritage significance of the town as a whole and are important examples of nineteenth century technology and construction techniques.
The stone lined drain from Sloane Street to Pleasant Creek, Stawell is historically and scientifically significant at a LOCAL level. It is demonstrates nineteenth century technology and relates to the municipal concerns with drainage and hygiene in the 19th century.

Stone Lined Channel, Sloane Street to Pleasant Creek,, STAWELL - Physical Description 1
The visible portion of this drain at present in 2004 begins from Sloane Street corner between the Railway station and Central Park, the drain then crosses underneath Seaby street near the Railway crossing and proceeding down Taylor Street, crossing Prince, Griffith, Smith D'Arcy and Cooper Streets and crossing the present Western highway before Playford Street and there joins into Pleasant Creek before the creek crosses the Grampians Road.
The natural drainage of the town moves down from Big Hill, draining to the west through various watercourses and drains. Various minor drains and water courses feed the system as well as a mostly unformed and unlined system to the north west of the town which drains to the west.
The channel is constructed from sand stone which came from Heatherlie Quarry and Black range granite.
