Heritage Inventory History of Site:
STANLEY GOLD MINING COMPANY, Pitfield Plains, Bulldog West, (private property),
NEW STANLEY COMPANY (name given in the March 1871 report). There was a New Stanley Co. located at Illabarook recorded production for this mine from January 1908 to December 1912 was 871 ozs 13 dwt (or 27.112 kg).
1864: started and sunk to a depth of 120 feet when water was met; machinery was put on the mine.
09.1865: shaft down 119 feet; 70 horsepower steam engine on the ground
14.11.1865: erecting new 30 inch cylinder steam engine
12.1865: fine 70 horsepower steam engine erected
03.1866: erecting machinery
12.1870: prospects of this mine are good for mining in the district.
1870 or 71 ; it stood for six or seven years before sinking was resumed and the shaft sunk to 220 feet.; the lead was worked for 1000 feet but proved to be unpayable; mine was the taken on tribute by a party of Chinese for a period but was then abandoned, ransacked by fossickers and finally closed.
03.1871: company referred to as the New Stanley; has highly promising prospects.
31.10.1872: special meeting of shareholders agreed to the issue of 2000 extra shares at £1 to all 4 weeks of driving.
21.01.1873: actively pumping and water reducing.
06.1872: referred to as the Stanley again; was the test mine for the Pitfield Plains; has exhausted its capital for prospecting and has passed into the hands of a Chinese tribute party for two years.
1872: recorded production of 120 ozs or 3.733 kg.
03.1873: prospects look better with a new run of stone which is yielding 10 ozs per machine.

STANLEY CO - Heritage Inventory Description
The mullock heap is the only feature remaining at this site. It is on the east side of the depression that identifies the location of the shaft. It is 55m by 30m by 8m high. There is a scatter of quartz wash covering the ground south of the shaft near the road.
