G.G. CONSOLIDATED MINE SITE - History
G G Consolidated mine is located on Glasgow Reef. This reef was being worked as early as 1855. By 1858, there were several parties working the reef through open cutting and shallow shafts. The first mining company to work the Reef was the Glasgow Reef United Gold Mine and Crushing Company. A second company, Golconda Mining Co,. was formed in 1865 and worked the reef to the south. Both companies installed crushing machinery, but only evidence surviving today is found at the Golconda Mine Site. The Glasgow battery has 30hp engine driving 20 heads of stamps; the Golconda battery was powered by a 50hp engine which drove 30-head of stamps. The stamp boxes rested on granite blocks. The boiler house had a round brick stack which was 78 feet high. A third company, G.G. Consolidated, took over the two mines and sunk a main shaft to the south of the Golconda Mine. At this shaft the company installed winding and pumping machinery driven by a 25hp engine. As was normal for those time, the chimney stack assoc. with the boiler house as brick. A tramway embankment (see historic plan in attachment) run from the shaft to the Golconda battery. By March 1883, the main shaft was down 790 feet. The G.G. Consolidated Co. mined intermittently during the 1890s. In the early 1900s the company was reformed as the New G G Consolidated but did little mining.G.G.
