LODDON RIVER PLATFORM COMPLEX - History
A plan of the Loddon dating to 1878 (L1 F47/2), indicates the majority of the complex was most likely part of the large allotment registered to Li Chun. By 1903, A Yong Kit (L1 F62614) made an application to occupy the same allotment, which continued to be owned by Chinese males until 1912 when it was transferred to H.J.J. Potter. It is not clear when the land was returned to the Crown, or when the residences were abandoned; Potter used at least one of the structures that were located on top of the platform. By the 1930s, the residences no longer existed.LODDON RIVER PLATFORM COMPLEX - Interpretation of Site
Two of the platforms appear to be located on a historically Chinese allotment. However, site boundaries are based on those of Chinese market gardens in photographs now held at the Castlemaine Historical Society and Parks Victoria Castlemaine. Site remains can be associated with Chinese huts of the late nineteenth/early twentieth century. The huts may have been part of a market garden that supplied the wider diggings with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Heritage Inventory Description
LODDON RIVER PLATFORM COMPLEX - Heritage Inventory Description
Remains of three platforms, standing up to 0.8 m above the Loddon River Flat - N of Ryan's (private) property. The platforms are located beneath the foot of Sailor's Hill, backed by Moyle's Race. The western and eastern platforms (~4x5 m) show no visible structural remains. The middle platform (5x3 m) is associated with sandstone rubble piled near an almond tree.
One of few representative sites that can be associated with Chinese market gardens of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as one of the most significant gold fields of the Victorian gold rush - the Mount Alexander diggings.
Three raised platforms - remains of sandstone rubble on the middle platform. Associated with exotic tree species (located below the remains of Moyle's Race) and fertile river flats. The site is bounded in the N by the Loddon River; in the W by a private orchard; an arbitrary line in the E, leading from platform C; and the foot of a hill in the S. A dirt track leads up the hill, near the old gold workings.
