Veterans Description for Public
Portland Battery Point - Veterans Description for Public
Portland Battery Point, between Victoria Parade and Port Road, was one of three shore defences at important strategic locations on Victoria's western coastline, including Port Fairy and Warrnambool which were constructed in the late 1880s. Fears were growing that the conflict between Russia and Great Britain was imminent. In 1887, noted authorities Sir W. Jervois and Peter Scratchley arrived to advise the colonies on a defence plan.
The Battery is set on an elevated position overlooking the ocean and the settlement. The three gun emplacements are located around a central mound which was the old magazine. The ground slopes from this mound to the east and west. A semi-subterranean battery and magazine was constructed on the site in 1889. Prior to the Battery, the site was the "observatory" (1839), a flagstaff (1854) and a lighthouse complex (1859). The lighthouse was moved to Whalers Bluff in 1889.
