The Hexham War Memorial, on Webster Street, comprises of a granite obelisk erected in 1921. The obelisk is located at the end of the Hexham Avenue of Honour and was erected to commemorate the First World War. It was first inscribed with thenames of seven men who lost their lives in theFirst World War.I n 1990, a plaque was added in memory of later conflicts, it acknowledges thirty-nine personnel who served in the Second World War including A.J. Jubb and N. Midling, T.J. Jubb M.M. in Korea, M.J. Harris and W. Ponting in Vietnam.
The obelisk was designed in the style of a tapered Egyptian obelisk, which was a common design for First World War memorials. The top section of the memorial was polished stone, while the bottom section was left rock-faced; this was a popular masonry technique of the time as signifying the idea of order emerging from chaos. The memorial was erected by Wooles and Carpenter, who were monumental masons of Warrnambool. The cost of the work, totalling £180, was raised by public subscription.
