Marnoo Memorial Gates and Park - Veterans Description for Public
The Soldier's Memorial Park, on Park Street Marnoo, consists of an open grassed sports ground which features four imposing stuccoed gate piers at the entrance to the park. Each of the piers feature rectangular white marble tablets with the names of those who fought and died in the First and Second World Wars.
In 1919, the Marnoo Progress Association presented the idea for a Soldier's Memorial Park at a public meeting. A site was chosen west of the township and was officially opened Anzac Day, 1921. Three years later in 1924, the concrete gates were erected. Inset tablets were inscribed of those who came from the district that had served, 'in the Great War.' Of the four pillars, the tablets were placed on the inside two, and the names were divided into those that had served and those that had been 'faithful unto death.' The Stawell Times reported on the progress in March 1924:
"Marnoo - The Soldiers' Memorial Park Committee are busy getting concrete gates completed. Mr. Phillips of Stawell was the contractor, and pillars are now completed, only the ball tops are to be laid on each pillar. A picket fence, about a chain long, each side, is to be erected and iron gates, when painted will show off a monument Marnoo and district will be proud of."
Mr. George Gray of Stawell lettered the two slabs that are attached to the two main pillars. During the Second World War, the park seemed to have fallen into disrepair. By 1950, a move had been made to place similar slabs into the outside pillars of the gate for those that had served in the Second World War. This was completed the following year and was unveiled on Anzac day 1960.
