RALEIGH MANSION (SITE) - History
JOSEPH RALEIGH APPEARS TO HAVE CONSTRUCTED A HOMESTEAD ON HIS LAND, PORTION 1, PARISH OF CUT PAW PAW FROM AROUND 1848-49 TO 1852 ALTHOUGH THE HOUSE WAS INCOMPLETE ON HIS DEATH IN 1852. (FORD & LEWIS 1989:6) THE LAND WAS LATER OWNED BY CB FISHER WHO DEVELOPED IT AS A STUD FARM. AFTER FISHER RAN INTO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES HE SOLD OUT TO THOMAS BENT WHO SUB-DIVIDED THE LAND IN 1882 AS THE MARIBYRNONG PARK ESTATE (THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A ROAYL COMMISSION INTO ASPECTS OF THE DEAL). THE HOMESTEAD SEEMS TO BE IN RUINS BY 1892. THE LAND LATER BECAME PART OF THE MARIBYRNONG EXPLOSIVES FACTORY.Heritage Inventory Description
RALEIGH MANSION (SITE) - Heritage Inventory Description
THE SITE IS PART OF THE MARIBYRNONG EXPLOSIVES FACTORY SITE. ACCESS TO RALEIGH'S MANSION WAS PREVENTED BY A STOUT WIRE FENCE BUT IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT SOME REMAINS OF THE HOUSE ARE EXTANT ON SITE. THE LARGE STABLES BUILDING REMAINS ON THE SITE (FISHER STABLES). VIEWS ACROSS THE SITE FROM ROSAMOND ST SUGGEST THAT SOME OF THE LANDSCAPE FEATURES SUCH AS TREE PLANTINGS MAY REMAIN INTACT AS WELL. THE SITE SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY ASSESSED ONCE ACCESS CAN BE OBTAINED FOR THE SITE HAS OBVIOUS HERITAGE POTENTIAL NOT ONLY FOR ITS ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS BUT AS A SIGNIFICANT LANDSCAPE.
