SANDY'S GRAVE - History
IN THE 1860S, HURTLE [SIC] FISHER AND HIS BROTHER CHARLES DEVELOPED THE MARIBYRNONG HORSE STUD. ONE OF THE HORSES FROM THIS STUD, LANTERN, WON THE MELBOURNE CUP IN 1864 AND ALSO THE DERBY AND "THE PUBLICAN'S PURSE " RACE. THE HORSE DIED SOON AFTER AND WAS BURIED AT MARIBYRNONG IN THE SAME GRAVE AS THE STALLION FISHERMAN. (FORD & LEWIS, 1989:12-13) THE OTHER HORSE, SANDY, WAS OWNED BY GENERAL BRIDGES AND WAS THE ONLY HORSE TO RETURN FROM WWI. IT IS BELIEVED THAT SANDY WAS BURIED NEXT TO THE OTHER HORSES IN 1923 ON THE BOTTOM SLOPE OF REMOUNT HILL.SANDY'S GRAVE - Interpretation of Site
THE SITE IS BELIEVED TO CONSIST OF TWO HORSE GRAVES. ONE CONTAINS THE MILITARY HORSE SANDY, INTERRED IN 1923. A DRAWING DATED 5/11/1892 SHOWS A RING OF TREES AND A PICKET FENCE AROUND FISHERMAN'S GRAVE.
