MASSEY'S BOATSHED, SLIPWAY AND JETTY - History
Permission to build a boatshed was sought in the early half of 1904 and it was proposed to provide facilities for fishermen's small boats. A small jetty was erected the same year, and permission was granted to build the boatshed at the side of Lillington's Baths. It appears construction of the boatshed was delayed, as a chandler not was employed to do the work until 1908, and this was ready for use by the holidays. By 1912 boat excursions were being run from this facility. The site was sold to Messr Roberts in 1922, and changed hands again to Messr Massey in the early 1930's when it then became known as Massey's Boatshed and Pier (Leak, pers comms). Timbers from Stevedore St Pier were subsequently used in the construction of the Massey Boat Shed complex at Williamstown Back Beach. Leak recalls seeing the shed in his childhood days in the 1940-50's, and says the site was sold again to Geoff Marks in 1949. It is not clear when the shed was demolished.
MASSEY'S BOATSHED, SLIPWAY AND JETTY - Interpretation of Site
The complex was located at the current site of the Eastern groyne at the Williamstown Back Beach. The slipway and jetty site is located under the current dressed bluestone groyne, which was built around and upon the former site's rough cut bluestone base and piles (Leek, pers comms). No further evidence of the boatshed was located during an an inspection. This site is likely to be preserved under the encasing stone groyne.
This site is likely to be preserved under the encasing stone groyne. It has archaeological potential as a surviving example of a local boatbuilding facility and forms part of the recreational and boatbuilding landscape of Williamstown Beach.
