THE WINE HALL - History
Of specific relevance to the study area is the former presence of 'The Wine Hall and Wine Cave' located at the junction of Maribyrnong River and Steeles's Creek. The historical documentation of this historic activity is limited. Approximately 1894, Robert young purchased a small allotment near Steele's Creek and set up the Wine Hall with John Paul Henry Seyfarth (History online). The pair sold colonial wines, aerated drinks, tea, coffee and light snacks from their weatherboard premises. A cave at the rear of the building was used to store the wine. The cave itself is one big room with a 'shelf on the right that goes back about 5 feet' into the cliff. Above this was a vault to the cliff face above that was 'and escape hatch just wide enough to squeeze through'. Around the late 1980s a metal gate was installed at the cave entrance to prevent public access. The postcard below, dated 1907, the Wine Hall appears in good condition and the river and creek banks are still thickly covered with mature native vegetaion. The wharf itself is built on the banks of Maribyrnong River and a small footbridge spans Steele's Creek leading to the Wine Hall. Access to the Wine Hall was by boat only. Activities and excursions on the Saltwater had become increasingly popular and by 1896 a steamer called maribyrnong was able to transport approximately 20 people at a shilling each. This popularity increased during the early 1900s and in 1906 more people were able to visit the Wine Hall when the electric tram began running from the Flemington Bridge to the Saltwater River.THE WINE HALL - Interpretation of Site
