EAST LOUGHNAN AND REEVE BUILDING AND WELL, TARRAVILLE - History
Reeve's special survey was granted in 1841and laid out in 1843. The history of this specific site in the earliest period of settlement is currently unknown. Butler's 1866 directory (not an entirely reliable source) suggests that in that year four to five structures existed between the Freemason's Arms (immediately south of Stawell Street) and Martha Crains house/shop (immediately south of The Commercial Inn). These included an ostler, a carrier, a boarding school/schoolhouse and a store. However the precise relationship of these with the present site and the sites pre-1866 history remains a matter of conjecture for the time being.EAST LOUGHNAN AND REEVE BUILDING AND WELL, TARRAVILLE - Interpretation of Site
The mound is the accumulation of brick footings and debris in and around one of the early structures in the survey. The hand-made bricks lining the well strongly suggest that the well is associated with the shop.
