CONSTABLE'S HUT, TARRAVILLE - History
This mound is believed to be the Constable's Hut shown on 1850's historical parish maps T/70 and T/72 - though if this identification is accurate, the latter maps location of the hut at the corner of Stawell and Reeve Streets is inaccurate. While the first Gippsland police were stationed in Alberton, constables were stationed in Tarraville by 1851. By 1866, the Tarraville Constabulary had moved south to Bridge Road. In the Government survey; The Fate of the Hut after its abandonment by the police is unknown. It is perhaps significant that this early police-associated structure is in the special survey, rather than the government survey.CONSTABLE'S HUT, TARRAVILLE - Interpretation of Site
The rectangular shape of the mound and its location strongly suggest that it is associated with the 1840's settlement, possibly even being the Constable's Hut indicated on early maps of Tarraville.
