Damien Parer Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Damien Parer Memorial is located onon the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk in the Dandenong National Park. It is dedicated to the life of Parer who was a Photographer and War Correspondent (b. 1st August 1912 - d. 17th September 1944). Parer's film of the Kokoda Trail, Kokoda Frontline, recorded the appalling conditions Australians were dealing with while fighting the Japanese. The film won the 1943 Academy Award for Best Documentary, the only newsreel to receive an 'Oscar'. On September 17th 1944, Parer was killed by Japanese machine gun fire while filming the advance of U.S. Marines at Peleliu, Palau, Caroline Islands in the Pacific.
