Maribyrnong "Sandy" Horse Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Maribyrnong "Sandy" Horse Memorial Plaque is located outside the Community Centre on Randall Street. The plaque is dedicated to the honour of the Australian Light Horseman and the horses they rode during the First World War. Of particular note is the Light Horse "Sandy", the favourite charge of Major General William Throsby Bridges, Commander of the 1st Division of the Light Horse. Bridges died of wounds on 15th May 1915 at Anzac Cove but Sandy was sent onto to Egypt where he remained until the end of the war.
After the end of the war Sandy was shipped back to Australia where he lived for another six years at the Maribyrnong Remount Depot before he was put down in 1923 due to blindness. Of the 169,000 horses shipped from Australia to the front, only one, Sandy, returned home. Bridges was the only Australian First World War dead to return home to Australia (excepting the Unknown Soldier).
