Northcote WWI Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Northcote WWI Memorial, outside the R.S.L., is a bronze plaque depicting the battle at Rabaul in New Guinea. It was at Rabaul fighting against German Forces, that Australia suffered its first casualty of the First World War - Seaman William Williams. It also commemorates Captain Brian Pockley, of the Army Medical Corps, who gave his distinctive Red Cross armband to the mortally wounded Williams and carried him back to the H.M.A.S. Berrima. Pockley was mortally wounded soon after his heroic rescue effort and both he and Williams died aboard the Berrima on 11th September 1914.
