FORMER TRIHOLM RAILWAY STATION - History
The former Great Southern Railway (South Gippsland Line), which opened in 1892, branched from the Gippsland line at Dandenong and ran to Port Albert. The Strzelecki line, which branched from this at Koo-Wee-Rup was opened in 1922. The line served the farms of the western Strzelecki Ranges; the stations providing facilities for the storage of goods and the loading of sheep and cattle.
Triholm was the seventh station on the Koo-Wee-Rup to Strzelecki line (after Bayles, Catani, Yannathan, Heathhill, Athlone and Topiram). Construction of the line came at a time when railway expansion was generally being curtailed asa result of increased government expenditure on roads and the development of motor vehicles. The continued development of this line can be largely attributed to the significant increase in vegetable crops and dairy produce arising from the draining of the Koo-Wee-Rup swamp, which in turn supplied Victoria's profitable overseas trade in perishable foodstuffs.
Strzelecki Station closed on 22nd November 1930, at which point Triholm became the terminus. The Triholm and Strzelecki (Dismantling) Act, No 4518 of December 1937 authorised the dismantling of the rails and the sale of the land. The track in this section was taken up in 1938. Some of the structures at Triholm Station including the outer drafting yards had been moved by 1934. The Yannathan to Triholm section closed on 7th August 1941, but the remainderof the line continued in use until the route was finally closed on 4th February 1959.
FORMER TRIHOLM RAILWAY STATION - Archaeological Significance
The site has a low potential for sub-surface deposits or structural elements relating to the station.
FORMER TRIHOLM RAILWAY STATION - Interpretation of Site
There is little surviving evidence of the goods platform and its accompanying siding, or of the livestock yards and storage facilities. However, an earthwork at the northern end of the site appears to represent an access ramp from the main road.
A sign on the Main South Road celebrates Danish settlement of the place in 1877 and the 'Triholm Railway Station' from 1922 to 1941.
FORMER TRIHOLM RAILWAY STATION - Historical Significance
The site is significant for its association with the Koo-Wee-Rup to Strzelecki line branch line of the south Gippsland Railway.
