EMU HOTEL HOTEL AND STORE - History
1852: gold discovered in Spring Gully
1855: Hoskin's Emu store and hotel established, taking its name from the areas line of reefs - the Emu.
1857: Lots 3 and 4 of the land on which the store and hotel are situated are acquired by James Hoskins
1860: Lot 5 of the land on which the store and hotel are situated is acquired by James Hoskins
1869: death of James Hoskins, senior. The property is willed to his sons James and Thomas
1872-1873: James Hoskings, junior is rated for a store and dwelling with his occupation given as storekeeper.
1885: the 10-roomed wooden building was consumed by fire. Immediately rebuilt of sandstone.
EMU HOTEL HOTEL AND STORE - Interpretation of Site
The site contains a hotel, stables (existing residence) and a well. The fomer Emu Hotel and Store is associated with the development of Spring Gully from 1855, and the Hoskins family who operated the place throughout the nineteenth century.
Heritage Inventory Description
EMU HOTEL HOTEL AND STORE - Heritage Inventory Description
The site contains a former hotel that is currently being used as a residence.
Remains of the former Emu Hotel and Store include: two stone rectangular sections, not quite fully joined, with evidence of earlier rooms, a cellar and a central external stone and brick chimney within these walls. Walls are of locally sourced honey-coloured sandstone in roughly squared and randomly coursed rubble walling, with door and window openings constructed of brick.
There is evidence of several stone outbuildings, two underground wells andexotic tree plantings. The outlines of the associated nineteenth-century roads are still visible.
