FORMER GREEN VALLEY HOTEL SITE [FORMERLY OAKLANDS ROAD PAVING] - History
Nothing is known about the features, though Moloney and Johnson (1998) note a 'brick ... archaeological site ... an underground well/tank, perhaps part of the former McNamara' Hotel' that is described for the southwest corner of Oaklands and Somerton Roads. A structure is shown at this site on a map of 1916 (Sunbury 1 :63.360; Great Britian. War Office. General Staff. Commonwealth Section). There is no structure depicted in this position on a map of 1938 (Sunburyj1:63,360; Australian Section, Imperial General Staff) or on aerial photographs dating from the 19605. The field was part of the former Bulla Common which was subdivided in the 1870s as part of the Lands Act. and this may have been the location of one of the small farms that were thus created.
FORMER GREEN VALLEY HOTEL SITE [FORMERLY OAKLANDS ROAD PAVING] - Interpretation of Site
The recorded site consists of a small area of what appears to hand-made brick paving which is beneath a boxlhorn bush. Little interpretation is possible on the basis of this feature; glass and ceramic sherds nearby appear to be late 19th-century, which is also the likely date of the paving. This position would be a likely place for a residence or hotel, which are often situated at such crossroads. Oaklands Road was declared in 1848 (Moloney and Johnson 1998, 88/14), and the site is likely to have been built a'fter the subdivision of the area into farming plots as part of the Land Act of the 1870s.
FORMER GREEN VALLEY HOTEL SITE [FORMERLY OAKLANDS ROAD PAVING] - Archaeological Significance
The archaeologial significance of the site is low to moderate, though it is not possible to know the nature or significance of archaeological deposits and possibly buried structures without further investigation. The use of the area as pasture and lack of later developments on the sites might mean that archaeological deposits area preserved here.
