BROWN REEF MINE - History
The discovery of a new reef about three quarters of a mile south of Fryerstown at Nuggety Gully in August 1880 created much excitement and gave fresh impetus to mining speculation in the district. The reef was discovered by George Brown and James Williams and it became known as Brown's Nuggety Gully reef At surface level, a trial crushing of 14 tons of stone produced 30 ounces of gold. This was a very satisfying beginning. The next crushing was the best taken from the claim, 31 tons of stone gave a yield of 127 Y, ounces; 4 'Y. ounces per ton. Work continued with good results, to a depth of 300 feet when a geological fault in the country cut off the reef Although work continued in search of the reef, it was never found again.

Approximately 15m north of the above mentioned site is a small , filled shaft with an estimated 25 tonnes of mullock remaining. A further 35 m north approximately, are. two filled shafts, separated by about 15 m. The western site has approximately 40 tonnes of mullock remaining and the eastern site an estimated 20 tonnes. Also to be found in the immediate area are several small, shallow pits, exploration shafts and costeans. All these workings exhibit little quartz, implying that ore~grade material (if any) was treated.
