Stained Glass Window at Crib Point Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Chapel - Memorial Window Description & History
The Chapel of Our Lady Star of the Sea was designed by PJ O'Connor and Brophy and built by WA Medbury as a memorial to 'those men of the Royal Australian Navy who gave their lives in World War I and II'. The Foundation stone was blessed the Melbourne's Archbishop, the Most Rev. D. Mannix DD, LLD, on 6 October 1946. The builder ordered windows from Brooks, Robinson & Co. in March 1948, most to be made of 'amber quarries with a green outside border and a ruby inner border' with emblems inset, as was the case for this group in the north nave that each measured approximately 63 x 19 inches. The image is representative of the the Cahpel's nave windows.
HMAS Hobart was a modified Leander-class light cruiser commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy in 1938. During the Second World War she saw service first from Bass Straitthen to several major theatres of war and received battle honours for action in the East Indies 1940, Mediterranean 1941, Indian Ocean 1941, Coral Sea 1942, Savo Island 1942, Gualcanal 1942, Pacific 1942-45 and Borneo 1945. On 20 July 1943, HMAS Hobart was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while in the Solomon Islands and fourteen lives were lost. She was repaired at Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney and in 1945 returned to take part in landings at Tarakan, Brunei and Balikpan before proceeding to Tokyo in time for VJ Day in September.
