Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Wedderburn Try Boys' Society Non-denominational Classroom - Memorial Window Description & History
An image of this window, installed in a classroom at the Try Boys' Farm, Wedderburn, is held by the State Library of Victoria. The leadlight window was in three sections, the central panel fixed and the two side panels divided into sash windows in the lower sections and hopper ventilators at the tops, no doubt to provide light and air to the large room. The leadlight was made from rectangular quarries with a swag design that linked the top sections of all three panels, more typical of domestic windows of the period. The central panel had a shield in the centre with the flags of England and Australia crossed behind it and a stylised laurel wreath and crown above, at the centre of the swag. The inscription was placed on the plain shield.
Joseph John Rudduck was born in Dromana on 7 November 1889, the youngest son of Nelson and Jane Rudduck. After being rejected for military service in Melbourne, he sailed to England where he joined the British Army and served as Lieutenant with the Kings' Own, 1/4 Battalion Royal Lancaster Regiment attached to Headquarters 55th Division. He lost an arm whilst engaged in action in France and returned to England where he taught horsemanship for some time, until the last of his repeated requests to return to the action was accepted. He died of wounds on 5 June 1918 and was buried at 19 Pernes British Cemetery in France; his service is commemorated at the Dromana Cemetery on the Mornington Peninsula.
