Statement of Significance
What is significant?
Tiri-Tiri at 46 Kyarra Road, Glen Iris is a single-storey red-brick Queen Anne style house with a double-storey rear wing of matching design. Built in 1892, Tiri-Tiri was designed by noted architect Frank Tompkins as his own home. In partnership with his brother Harry, Frank Tompkins established one of Melbourne's most successful architectural firms of the early twentieth century.
Elements that contribute to the significance of the place include (but are not limited to):
. The original external form, materials and detailing of the single-storey front wing. . The generally high level of integrity of the front wing to its 1890s form. . The original external form, materials and detailing of the double-storey rear wing (to the extent visible from the street, including the timber shingle clad balcony to the south elevation). . The unpainted state of the face brick, slate and terracotta elements.Modern fabric, including the recent single-storey side addition and front fence, is not significant.
How is it significant?
Tiri-Tiri at 46 Kyarra Road is of local architectural significance to the City of Stonnington.
Why is it significant?
Tiri-Tiri is of architectural significance as a well resolved and notable early example of a Federation Queen Anne style villa (Criterion D & F, TEH 8.4.2 - Functional, eccentric and theatrical - experimentation and innovation in architecture). This mode of design was not widely adopted for villa housing in Melbourne until the early 1900s.
Tiri-Tiri is of some additional interest for having been designed by noted architect Frank Tompkins as his own residence (TEH 8.4.3 - Architects and their houses).
