FORMER RESIDENCES 5-27 KOROROIT CREEK ROAD - History
9-27 Kororoit Creek Road Three structures, which are presumed to be residences, are depicted along this portion of Kororoit Creek Road in the 1864 map by H. L. Cox. The structures are depicted with very little detail, so it is uncertain how these structures correlate with those evident in the 1894 Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) Plan No. 14. Eight weatherboard residences with a variety of outbuildings are depicted on the 1894 MMBW Plan No. 14 at the present day addresses 9, 13, 17, 19, 21 and 25 Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown. The residences all have weatherboard outhouses in the rear yards. As there is no access lane for nightcart men behind the properties, it is hypothesised that these facilities may have been cesspits. By 1910 the MMBW, Williamstown Detail Plan No.149 depicts only slight changes to the overall footprints of the residences. The 1910 plan also provides some more specific details; most of the properties are depicted as having front verandahs and No. 31 (present day No. 25) has a front garden and an internal kitchen sink. In 1912 the MMBW completed the sewering of Kororoit Creek Road (The Williamstown Chronicle 1912) and it is presumed that most, if not all, of the residences would have connected to the reticulated sewer at this time. Aerial imagery from 1945 demonstrates that by this time a new residence has been constructed at No. 27 Kororoit Creek Road (previously undeveloped). The residence at No.19 Kororoit Creek Road has either been replaced entirely or undergone extensive renovations. Aside from these examples, no discernible changes have taken place to the general footprints of the residences. Aerial imagery from 1970 demonstrates a new residence has been constructed at No. 23 Kororoit Creek Road (previously undeveloped). The roof of the residence at No. 25 Kororoit Creek Road has changed. This may indicate renovations including a second storey. Alternatively, the roof may have just been replaced. Aside from these examples no discernible changes have been identified to the other properties. By 1985 aerial imagery demonstrates that residences Nos. 9, 11, 13 and 21 Kororoit Creek Road have been demolished. The land at Nos. 9-13 Kororoit Creek Road remains vacant until the present day and has been used informally for car parking. Aerial imagery from 2009-2015 demonstrates that the property at No. 21 Kororoit Creek Road is being utilised, potentially by the neighbouring landowners as some small sheds and landscaping are evident. Aerial imagery demonstrates that the residence at No. 17 Kororoit Creek Road was demolished between 1986 and 2000 and the property remains vacant until the present day. The remaining residences, Nos. 19 and 23-27 Kororoit Creek Road are demolished between May 2015 and February 2016, the land remains vacant until the present day. 5-7 Kororoit Creek Road A single structure, presumed to be a residence, is depicted along this portion of Kororoit Creek Road in the 1864 map by H. L. Cox. The structure is depicted with very little detail, so it is uncertain if it is the same as the structure depicted on the 1894 Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) Plan No. 14. However, it is quite possible that the structures are the same. The 1894 MMBW Plan No. 14 depicts the residence at the present day address 5-7 Kororoit Creek Road, Williamstown as constructued of weatherboard. By 1910 the MMBW, Williamstown Detail Plan No.149 depicts several additional structures at the property, including a small masonry structure adjoined to the rear of the residence. In the 1910 MMBW plan the residence is designated No. 9 Kororoit Creek Road, therefore the street numbers changed at some stage between 1910 and the present day. By 1945 aerial imagery demonstrates that all of the structures at 5-7 Kororoit Creek Road have been demolished. Aerial imagery from 1970 demonstrates that by this time the property has been redeveloped. These structures are extant today and are used for commercial purposes.FORMER RESIDENCES 5-27 KOROROIT CREEK ROAD - Interpretation of Site
