Statement of Significance
This is likely an archaeological site which relates to the early european occupation of Melbourne. It is significant as a record of a relatively later Melbourne subdivision in response to the effects of the goldrush.

196-200 A'BECKETT STREET - History
1852- Outside the City of Melbourne northwest expansion
1858- subdivided along with the A'Beckett Street allotments
1866- James Landell's built a 5-room house and workshop of stone and brick
1873- Lily Landells built 2 two-storey terraces, possibly on the previous house footings
1959- replaced by current building.196-200 A'BECKETT STREET - Interpretation of Site
Adjacent excavations at 192 A'Beckett Street uncovered a wall feature that previously extended into the address, but is cut by modern footings. Although the Melbourne clay level is shallow, footings of the previous buildings including Landell's 1860s property are likely to survive.

196-200 A'BECKETT STREET - Heritage Inventory Description
Site currently a 2-4 storey disused backpackers accommodation, the Nomads building. This is a brick building on strip footings and recently upgraded.
