Statement of Significance
What is significant?
17 Stanley Terrace is of archaeological significance due to it relationship the the development and expansion of early suburban Melbourne. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, the rail line propelled growth in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, creating in turn the expansion of both residential and commercial properties. It is possible that ground disturbing works at 17 Stanley Terrace may uncover archaeological remains associated with either/or the main property, outbuilding, and cesspit recorded on historic plans. This property was removed sometime between 1910 and 1945, presumably around the time of construction for Chatham Station in 1927.
Any buried foundations, deposits, or artefacts associated with these properties can therefore have the potential to add to the understanding of early 20th century suburban life.
