What is significant?
Archaeological deposits and features potentially preserved at the site associated with the historic occupation of the land during the period c.1855 to 1911. In particular, archaeological deposits and features that date to and are associated with the c.1871 to 1911 operational period of Lansell’s 222 Gold Mine, and with the domestic occupation of the site during that period as evidenced in historic images.

The site is historically significant as it:
- Demonstrates key historic phases of Bendigo’s history – gold mining and the development of Bendigo township;
- Is historically associated with George Lansell, a prominent gold miner of the nineteenth century and the owner/occupant of the associated historic residence Fortuna Villa located to the immediate west of the site.
- In association with Fortuna Villa is demonstrative of the wealth and prosperity of George Lansell during the nineteenth century gold mining period.
Archaeological Significance:
The site has archaeological significance due to its potential to contain historical archaeological features, deposits and artefacts associated with: the use of the land as a gold mining operation during the period c.1855 to 1911; and the concurrent domestic occupation of the site that is suggested by historic images of that period. In particular, the site is likely to contain archaeological features and deposits associated with the c.1871-1911 operational period of George Lansell's 222 Gold Mine.
