PINKEY POINT, CATHCART - History
Assuming the interpretative signs were placed in the early 2000s (Gold 150) and the monument being there a lot longer.PINKEY POINT, CATHCART - Interpretation of Site
Guessing but assume mine shafts established in 1850's, stone monument added sometime later and the interpretative signage added in early 2000s.
Heritage Inventory Description
PINKEY POINT, CATHCART - Heritage Inventory Description
Pinkey Point appears to be a roadside stop for travellers and includes some touristy signage and a picnic table. The centre point is a large worked stone monument approx 2 m tall with a plaque reading "Pinkey Point, here in May 1854, Joseph Pollard and his mates found the first gold in the Ararat District". In this very small parcel are a number of what appear to be mine shafts including two covered with mesh and a small sheltering roof. There are a number of interpretative signs (see photos) around the site explaining the history of finding gold, the gold rush and ways of finding gold. The signs have branding on them for Gold 150 and ARCC. Noted some defacement on one sign where it mentioned Chinese immigrants. As per uploaded title and plan, the site is owned by ARCC. They may have a better description for significance then why 't it me on the heritage overlay?
