MICKLEHAM ROAD COTTAGE - History
The subject site is located in Crown Allotment 21 in the Parish of Yuroke and formed part of the pastoral run held by G.S and R. Brodie. Early maps show that by 1871 the land east of Mickleham Road was in the possession of J. Murphy. By 1890 the property was in the possession of Frederick White before being inherited by George Hooper in 1902; both of these men were described as 'farms' on the Certificate of Title. In 1921, part of the land was transferred to Frederick Rhodes, while the remainder was transferred to the widow of Hooper and George James. It is most likely that the cottage was constructed early in the 20th century when larger pastoral runs were broken up into smaller holdings as part of the Closer Settlement Scheme. The subject land came into the possession of Hutton William Robert Troutbeck in 1938; the Troutbeck family has grazed dairy cattle on the property since.MICKLEHAM ROAD COTTAGE - Interpretation of Site
The property represents a long phase of the pastoral history of the Mickleham area having been owned by the Brodies before being broken up into smaller holdings. The cottage is shown on the 1916 Sunbury topographic map, indicating that it was in existence in the early part of the twentieth century. The site is currently located within a dairy farm. There is a mid-20th century weatherboard house to the west of the cottage which does not form part of the proposed extent of the place.
