FORMER KILMORE RAILWAY STATION - History
The site falls within a a 1.732 ha (4.28 acre) parcel of land, located on the corner of Rutledge Street and Hamilton Street, Kilmore. The township of Kilmore was gazetted in 1848, comprising an area of 4,480 acres. The station was constructed between 1887-1890, and comprised part of the Wandong Heathcote & Sandhurt Railway. The railway was predominantly used to transport local produce, alongside timber, firewood and charcoal to both Bendigo and Melbourne. The line ceased to be used in the 1960s, and was officially closed under the "Heathcote Railway Removal Act 1975 Act No 8682". The final passenger train ran from Kilmore on 26 June 1965, and the final goods train in November 1968.FORMER KILMORE RAILWAY STATION - Interpretation of Site
The rail line is visible in 1956 aerial photography, showing three railroad cars sitting on a section of track, as well as two sheds adjacent to the track to the east, as well as a fenced off area that appears to connect to the railway line. This fenced off area disappears in 1966 aerial photography, with the other features remaining unchanged. By 1987 both the sheds and tracks have been removed. Recent archaeological survey found the site to be largely altered. Two embankments demarcate the placement of the old rail line, and remnant concrete and associated rubbish occur sporadically throughout the site. An intact sill buffer stop remains in the southeast corner of the site, and the remains of a concrete wall is situated adjacent to the eastern boundary. The property is currently a vacant lot; material of archaeological significance may occur in subsurface contexts.
