Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The site is close to the Gravel Pit alluvial workings and is a part of Ballaarat’s original Main Street. The site contains an early Hotel and a Hay and Corn store and a later established nursery. It also contained a Bruns Hotel and an early glassware distributor. The site was developed in the 1860s and again in the late nineteenth century with structures that are likely to have archaeological features and deposits. The site is likely to contain a large amount of fill protecting the initial and early gold rush deposits and features.
How is it significant?
The site is of historical and archaeological significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as the location of an early residence and commercial precinct during the years of the Victorian gold rush – one of the most significant rushes in world history. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment of commercial operations in the gold rush, and other later 19th century activities.
