Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Gowar State School site represents an early small school established in 1855 and occupied until 1908. The site comprises a sandstone and mortar ruin, with potential subsurface features extending beyond the ruin. The site is likely to contain subsurface deposits associated with the occupation of the school.
How is it significant?
The site is of archaeological and local historical significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance for its association with the development of Back Creek, Bacon Gully, Gowar and Muckleford North from the early 1850, until the 20th century. The site has the potential to contain subsurface archaeological features, deposits and artefacts associated with the occupation of the site as well as mining relics.
