STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The sandstone Cottage in Ceres Township was erected prior to 1856 for Edward Edwards and for many years was the residence of the blacksmith who operated the adjoining blacksmith's forge until 1919. The forge has now been demolished. A later owner was Henry Squire, a Shire Councillor, and Justice of the Peace. This Colonial Georgian style cottage of finely detailed Barrabool stone ashlar facade, and axial plan is an essential element in the picturesque Ceres townscape and one of few surviving cottages in this once thriving viticultural and agricultural area.
